Yesterday we decided to do the Wall Walk. Its a 2 hour walk that has remnants of the wall and monuments along the way. Our suburb was once split right down the middle by the Berlin Wall so we started just around the corner.
Overnight, families were separated. There are some chilling photos of people holding their babies up above the wall so family members on the other side can see them.
We found out that the Berlin wall was rebuilt 3 times over the period. Each time a bit higher and nastier.
The East Germans cleared a 100 metre strip around the wall so they could get a clear shot of anyone trying to escape. The odd thing is this 100 metre strip pretty much exists today – like a scar running around the city. Mostly it is weeds and wasteland, completely undeveloped. We could not help thinking that if this was Sydney Harry Triguboff would have been in there like a flash.
Below is one of the nicer parts where they have created a park and a plaque for every person that died trying to cross.
This is one of the more typical parts – but then we were intrigued by the structure in the background.
Turns out it is an aerial obstacle course (Public Liability insurance must be dead cheap in Germany). Zach and Kurt are heading off to try it out next week. i am going to pass. Just standing in a chair is enough to get my adrenalin pumping…
In the same complex – which is like in the middle of Zetland – is a patch of sand and deck chairs (no pool) where you can lie in the sun, drink beer and pretend you are at the beach…
Loving the posts guys!
Thanks Phil – we are having fun doing them.
We find as we are wandering around we are now thinking – “yeah that would make a great post !”
Other wise i would never take photos.
Cheers
