There was a labor crisis in West Berlin after the wall went up and conveniently high unemployment across the way in Turkey. The Turkish tried hard to get West Germany to take on their guest workers – but the West Germans would not have a bar of it. Until that is, it suited the Americans – they needed to stabilise Turkey – so they put the pressure on and it all happened.
Today Kreuzburg has the 5th largest Turkish community in the world. This is great for us as Kreuzburg now has the BEST markets twice a week; catering mainly for the Turkish community. Great fruit and veg and really cheap. So we jump on the train twice a week to stock up.
The markets are on the banks of a river and are very, very long and very narrow. You can buy pretty much anything here – i bought a genuine Columbian panama hat. Looks cool.
The markets are really a canvas Westfield. Too many strollers, lots of shops selling the same thing, parking is a bitch and tenants come and go from week to week – but a good day out all the same.
Kurt misses the nana trolley – we have to use backpacks. Zachery being a young man would not been seen dead with one.
Looks wonderful guys and I hope you can answer a question that has been niggling me for sometime. Is ‘turkish bread’ in a turkish market just called bread? Px
